In the past oral drug delivery was limited to using syrups, tablets or capsules to administer oral drugs. It is estimated that more than 50% of patients do not comply with dosing prescriptions due to:
- Poor taste
Taste is the dominant property in determining oral medication compliance. If medication has a poor taste, the likelihood of non-compliance increases. - Difficulty in administration
Approximately 1/3 of patients have difficulty swallowing tablets or capsules. This is especially pertinent amongst geriatric and paediatric patients. - General inconvenience
People normally eat at regular intervals, and are unlikely to skip a meal, but often forget to take medication. By making medication part of a meal, better prescription compliance can be achieved.
The MetriCap metered dose dispensing closure now allows oral drugs to be formulated so that they are compatible with edible compounds, and delivered as a gel or paste. By dispensing an exact dose from a tube, drugs for children can be masked by spreading the ointment on bread, or a doughnut. Even pets will find a Beeno Biscuit with a spread more appealing than a pill.
